Hi I am 18 years old and I am interested in obtaining a pistol for personal/home defence here in Colorado Springs. I know you have to be 21 to purchase one from a licenced dealer, but I understand there are ways to obtain one legally. Something about buying one from a private party or being gifted one, but you need to have a licensed person to oversee the purchase in order for a background check or something along the lines of that. Or I hear I can purchase an 80% kit that I can put together. Could anyone elaborate on those processes, or tell me any other way I could obtain a pistol legally? Thanks.

Colorado does not provide a minimum age to possess rifles or shotguns. Colorado also provides no minimum age for the purchase of a handgun or a long gun, although federal age restrictions still apply. That being said federally you must be 21 to purchase a handgun and complete a 4473 during the background check. Background checks are required in Colorado even for private sales. With all that information in mind I do not se show you could LEGALLY obtain a handgun at 18. (This is not legal advice) consulting with your local sheriffs office is always a good start.
